ONRUSH

Arcade racing roars into view

-

If Burnout and MotorStorm collided you’d have one heck of an insurance claim. You’d also likely end up with Onrush. Picking from the debris of those two classic arcade racers and adding some new ideas, Codies’ new speedster feels like a fresh set of tyres in a genre dominated by sim-cades.

The good news is takedowns are back, as Onrush celebrates the brutal thrill of winning by any means necessary. *wipes away a tear of joy*

In classic Burnout style, shoving rivals into barricades or shunting them off the road earns you points. With an emphasis on openness reminiscent of MotorStorm, finding hidden routes enables you to get above your rivals for a heavy metal takedown.

This game isn’t a simple homage to PlayStation’s past glories, though, as it introduces a bold new idea to racing: you don’t need to cross the finish line first to win. In fact, there is no finish line. In a nod to Overwatch, each ‘race’ is a blend of pointsbased objectives that demand you master tricky stunt combos, take the best racing lines, or drive opponents off a cliff for XP. And because there’s no finish line you won’t be waiting an age to respawn; a tap of the button sends you back into the thick of the stampede. Revenge is swift.

Riffing on two of our favourite racing series, Onrush is already looking like a summer smash.

“YOU DON’T NEED TO CROSS THE LINE FIRST.”
