game. Hah! The island I come to soon teaches me otherwise. I love being able to dual-wield swords; what I don’t love is repeatedly dying so that I have to run through the same patch of scenery again and again. I don’t have time for this. I have three kids!

By the time I reach the second half of the island, however, I’m well into the (sword)swing of things. I’ve mastered combat and inventory management well enough to make it all the way to the boss without dying once. The boss itself, though, doesn’t so much kick my backside as jump up and down on it wearing football boots.

This humiliating defeat is actually a good thing, as it encourages me to try summoning another player into my game to help me out. A few hours later, I’ve discovered that Nioh is a good game when it’s played solo, but a great game when two people are looking out for one another, watching each other’s backs and kicking monster behind. I’m converted, and there’s Nioh going back.

I LOOT THE CORPSE FOR A WEAPON. AND A PAIR OF TROUSERS.
