Budget Kindle with front light from Amazon

- BY ORLAITH COSTELLO

Amazon has unveiled its most affordable Kindle e-reader yet with the range’s first front light. Available for pre-order now for $139, releasing April 10.

The all-new Kindle features a thinner, lighter design with adjustable display brightness for easier reading indoors at night and outdoors in the sun.

It retains the glare-free display with easy-to-read text which has made Kindle the e-reader of choice for so many.

Amazon boasts that this new device includes the latest electronic ink technology for better contrast — and therefore a better reading experience — on its 6-inch, 167 ppi display.

It also uses capacitive touch technology to prevent accidental swipes, plus a battery life of weeks, instead of hours.

In addition to built-in features and apps like Goodreads, X-Ray, Whispersync, and Smart Lookup, the new Kindle includes Amazon’s latest updates to the e-reader range.

Now, when readers finish their book, it will automatically be marked as read in their library and synced across all reading devices — including the Kindle iOS and Android apps.

This new feature will be rolled out in the coming months to the new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite Gen 6 to current (released in 2013), and any future devices.

“Customers consistently tell us how much they appreciate having a front light on Kindle devices so they can read in any environment—from a sunny patio to their bed at night,” said Kevin Keith, Vice President, Amazon Devices.

“The team worked hard to bring this customer-favourite feature to our most affordable device, and we’re excited to introduce the all-new Kindle to Australia.”

The new Kindle comes in black or white and is available for pre-order now for RRP $139 on Amazon, JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks and other select retailers.

The product will release in-store on April 10.
