DIMITRIS KATSANIS
ENGINEERING THE LIMITS
Dimitris Katsanis has had a 13-year association with British Cycling as a designer, during which time Team GB riders have won 51 gold medals at the Worlds and Olympics on bikes the Greek former track rider designed. So there was widespread approval when, in December 2013, the UCI appointed him as a consultant to its equipment commission with a brief to update the rules relating to bike and equipment development. Since the 1997 Lugano Charter, which abruptly ended a decade of innovations, the UCI has regularly been accused of having a reactionary approach to R&D. With the advent of electronic gearing, disc brakes and other developments, this document looks more outdated than ever. Manufacturers will be eager to see what Katsanis has in store for them.
