MATTHIEU REEB
THE FINAL WORD ON… EVERYTHING
Remember Francesco De Bonis? No, thought not… When, on 27 May 2010, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a UCI sanction, De Bonis became the first cyclist to be snared by the biological passport system. Though De Bonis wasn’t a star, his case was a litmus test for both the passport and CAS itself. A week later another Italian, Pietro Caucchioli, was caught in the same net and, ultimately, it was CAS who condemned Alberto Contador, then the greatest rider on the planet, for a test sample containing clenbuterol.
You won’t necessarily find CAS general secretary Matthieu Reeb on the Col d’Izoard come July (he’s an athletics man) but his influence is all over 21st century cycling.
