CALEB EWAN'S SCOTT FOIL RC

Tiny aero racer for Orica-Scott sprint star

-

With the proportions of a monster truck, Caleb Ewan's size 51 Scott Foil looks far too small for its wheels ahead of the start of the Tour Down Under. No matter, the Australian sprint star utterly dominated the race, winning four stages and, naturally, the sprints jersey. In fact, the only two stages he didn't take were the uphill finishes to which Richie Porte romped on his way to the GC title and locking out the race for home riders.

The spec of his bike is dictated as much by necessity as preference. The 11-28 cassette is gappy but needed for the day’s uphill finish; only Chris Froome had the new Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 9170 group in January; and a supply issue meant that for this race Orica used separate stems and handlebars – a pleasingly old-school classic bend for 22-yearold Ewan – in place of the more aero one-piece Syncros cockpit usually found on the top Foils.
