The FDJ leader’s balance sheet at the end Giro was mixed. He crossed the Alps aiming for the podium but he finished fourth. He was one of the few able to live with Quintana and Movistar’s forcing on the Blockhaus but he was sick for the Stelvio stage. He rallied and had a strong final week, which included a fine stage win but he concluded with a leaden time trial that belied the gains he’s made in the discipline. But on final reckoning it was positive because his high finish will have snuffed any nagging worries that may have built up after two Tours where his GC hopes have ended early.
