Barguil is left to plough a lonely furrow at his home race, where he’ll want to improve on his career-best 14th overall two years ago, or rediscover the attacking instinct that brought him two stage wins at the 2013 Vuelta. However, his build-up has been hindered by a hip fracture. Sunweb will look to star signing Michael Matthews for a repeat of his stage win last year. In Revel, the Australian outsprinte­d rivals Peter Sagan, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Greg Van Avermaet, though he had tactical support from the two other Orica riders who’d made the initial break of 15. Will Sunweb have the tactical nous to give him the same kind of help this year?

TOUR PALMARÈS
