ISRAEL START-UP NATION

-

Twelve months ago, if you had told me that I would be riding for Israel Start-Up Nation as a WorldTour team in 2020 I might not have believed you.

It happened in two phases. I agreed to join a ProConti setup, which many saw as a strange move. But I was attracted by their ambition, willingness to innovate and listen and new world mentality but also their faith in my ability. They approached me having studied my training and personality profile with the belief that I was nowhere near my best, and that ISN was the right place to achieve my potential. Phase two was the WorldTour licence which I knew was on the table and which relieves a bit of pressure to perform and earn wildcard spots.

Having met up with the team

I am optimistic for a great season. We headed to Israel in December, my first time in the country, and it was eye-opening. I know the issues going on over Gaza casts a shadow on this whole project, but seeing Tel Aviv as its own entity, we experienced a cosmopolitan, international city thriving with innovation. Modern architecture sits comfortably alongside the old city, much like the many religions living side by side. It was a great experience riding through the desert and down to the Dead Sea.

I’ve also begun working with the team performance manager. It’s different to what I’ve done in the past. No ride is boring and although the intensity is mentally testing, I think I will be more ready than ever. The team made a huge signal of intent by signing up with Factor and Black Inc as equipment providers. We have some of the best bikes in the peloton and it is something that I pushed for. Races are won and lost in the team parking lot these days as substandard equipment leaves a big performance deficit. Sprints are won by millimetres; TTs decide stage races. Poor equipment costs results but the financials of sponsor payments are crucial, meaning many teams will ignore the data. I can’t wait to get my hands on a Factor in race trim with Black Inc wheels to see what it really feels like.

Being one of the leaders means I can select my programme. I’ve stuck to a similar calendar as in recent years because they are races I enjoy and am good at. I’m hoping to return with a vengeance to races in which I haven’t lived up to expectations in recent years, especially the Ardennes. I’ll head back to France in July as well with an unspecified goal. No pressure for GC; see what happens. Which is the plan for the whole season. Just go out there, race hard, enjoy myself and win some bike races.
