Tour de Suisse
Stage 7 San Gottardo, Switzerland
Egan Bernal prepares to celebrate as he crests the top of the Passo San Gottardo, cementing his lead at the 2019 Tour de Suisse. The young Colombian attacked alone on the last climb of the day, 2km from the finish, dropping all of his rivals on the way, and overtaking Enric Mas, who had pushed off the front two kilometres earlier. Despite the summer spot on the calendar, at 2,090m elevation there was still snow settled on the peak of the climb as Bernal sprinted towards the line. Barely anyone could follow the 22-year-old when he attacked on a cobbled section of the climb - the 12.4km road is unique for its spectacular 38 hairpin bends and stretches of historic cobblestones, known as Tremorla. Ineos set a fast pace straight away from the bottom. When Bernal accelerated, Domenico Pozzovivo and Rohan Dennis counterattacked late, but to no avail. Bernal finished 23 seconds ahead of the chasing duo, en route to overall victory. Having already triumphed at Paris-Nice, the Colombian looked to be continuing to peak form ahead of the Tour de France.
