After several years in the planning and weeks of rehearsals, a team of cast members and musicians will bring Opera Australia’s Carmen to life at Sydney’s Mrs Macquaries Point. More than artisans took hours to create hand-knotted wigs and costumes – including an orange skirt that was stitched using metres of fabric, weighs kilos and requires male dancers to hold it when Carmen appears in it on stage. pairs of shoes will be worn in the production. About people built the harbourside stage, which is almost times larger than any Australian indoor stage and features moving lights, LED lights and speakers. It took people hours to create the set, which includes letters spelling “Carmen” (they are metres high and studded with red light bulbs) and a neon sign representing a bull. There will be performances between March and April attracting more than spectators. It’s estimated that about glasses of sparkling wine will be sold each night – that’s all up.
