Food, art and music thrive in this Western Australian hotspot.

Just a 30-minute drive south of Perth, Fremantle is an epicentre of culture and cool. Vibrant and relaxed, Freo, as locals call it, combines stunning Indian Ocean beaches with urbane galleries, boutiques and a colourful cafe, restaurant, pub and live music scene. Stroll its walkable streets and you’ll discover no two visits are ever the same.

In warmer months, Fremantle’s public spaces come alive with exciting art events, such as the Fremantle Biennale

(1 to 30 November), a world-class contemporary art festival, and the unique Sculpture at Bathers exhibition (15 February to 2 March 2020) – both of which are set to premiere groundbreaking international art together with the dynamic works of local artists.

When the mercury drops, the city’s streetscapes – lined with heritage buildings, bars and intimate meeting spots – become the canvas. Under a cloak of darkness, Fremantle Festival:

10 Nights in Port (12 to 21 July) will reveal this maritime and university city’s spirit and soul through music, art, theatre, film, food, cabaret and storytelling. Some highlights: winter music series Hidden

Treasures (11, 18 and 20 July), in which Fremantle’s most esoteric venues – think a moving historic tram and the cosy Buffalo Club – will showcase intriguing musical acts. Feast of the Deceiver

(11 to 14 July) is a mysterious six-course dinner held in a secret location revealed by email just before the event. A night of Indigenous storytelling by Noongar Elders at the Woylie Festival’s Moort

Kaalak or Family Home-Fire (20 July) will delight young and old.

There’s something for everyone in Fremantle, whichever way the ocean breeze blows.
