MAKE A MOVE auspost.com.au

Australia Post’s partnership with Qantas Freight enables it to deliver a huge volume of parcels for food suppliers like Brookfarm and retailers such as Catch. Gary Starr, the company’s executive general manager of Business and Government, explains the process.

How has working with Qantas Freight over the years helped expand Australia Post’s business?

Our partnership gives us a dedicated air fleet, plus priority access to belly space in Qantas’s passenger fleet. It’s not about changing the locations we deliver to – we already deliver everywhere we need to – it’s about capacity.

So how much is Australia Post moving in a busy period?

Last December, we delivered 40.5 million parcels, with

5.9 million kilos sent through our domestic air network. Our busiest day during this peak period was Monday, 17 December, when we delivered three million parcels. Of these, 400 tonnes were carried by our dedicated air-freight network.

When it comes to ecommerce, which areas are standouts?

According to the Inside Australian Online Shopping report – which is Australia Post’s annual in-depth study into consumer online shopping behaviour and trends – Point Cook, in Melbourne’s west, was the No. 1 online shopping suburb in Australia for the third consecutive year. Most of the top 10 buying locations (at right) were dominated by suburbs that have seen an influx of young families. By contrast, new entrant Bundaberg (10th), in Queensland, has a different demographic: its median age is six years above the Australian average.
