Pack Like a Pro
With famous fans such as Meghan Markle and Michelle Obama, Self-Portrait designer Han Chong knows a thing or two about how to be a best-dressed nuptials guest.
Heading for a destination wedding? Here’s what to take
DRESS
Push the boundaries and opt for a print or bold colour for the occasion. At Self-Portrait we use gathered twists to accentuate the curves of the feminine form; fluid draping allows the pieces to feel breezier and a lightweight fabric won’t cling in the heat.
SHOES
No need to pack your entire shoe collection – keep it to three or four pairs. For the ceremony and reception, a mid-heel is always best. Step out in some strappy sandals and you’ll be dancing the night away.
BAG
Keep it relaxed with a chic, unstructured pouch to hold the essentials. A beaded or fringed style adds glamour.
JEWELLERY
Try pearl earrings to complete the look. Alighieri’s jewellery [from London] has a raw imperfection I find so beautiful. I also love that hair accessories are making a comeback so pin your hair back loosely with clips for effortless cool.
ACCESSORIES
Post-wedding, a wide-brimmed hat is perfect for the pool or beach. This season, I love the oversized styles from New Yorkbased milliner Lola Hats.
SWIMSUIT
You shouldn’t be limited to the stereotypical shapes. Look for swimwear that can be layered and worn during the day then out to dinner and dancing.
Do you roll or fold? I always fold. I never have quite the right equipment to iron or steam creases out of clothes when travelling. Even though some people swear that rolling saves space, folding is the best way to keep wrinkles to a minimum.
Do you unpack at the hotel or live out of your suitcase? I only unpack the essentials as I’m rarely staying in one place for long. Toiletries are usually the first things to come out as I love a face mask to revive my skin after a long journey.
What do you wear on a long flight? I spend too much time on planes so comfort is key. Normally that means wearing something simple like relaxed trousers, sneakers, a hoodie and slouchy coat. Accessories are equally laid-back – a black cap and aviator sunglasses.
And what are your nonnegotiables? A felt fedora, white T-shirt, jeans or tailored pants and Celine slides. I don’t like to overthink my wardrobe so that’s the foundation of my daily uniform. If it’s a little chilly outside, I’ll layer with an oversized shirt and Burberry trench over the top.
Are you loyal to a particular colour scheme? Whether I’m away from home or not, I opt for a neutral palette of white, blues and denim so I can mix and match easily.
Are you influenced by your destination when packing? More by what I’ll be doing than the actual location. I always think ahead to the occasion and try to plan my wardrobe accordingly so I don’t over-pack.
