Qantas

From the CEO

- Alan Joyce CEO, Qantas

Every 59 seconds, a Qantas customer “ticks the box” and opts to fly carbon neutral on their next flight. It’s a simple act that costs a couple of dollars. But it makes a real difference.

When you tick that box, your contribution goes directly into projects across Australia and around the world, protecting the natural environment and creating more jobs.

One of those projects is in the northern Kimberley region of Western Australia, where Qantas supports Indigenous rangers in their efforts to stop uncontrolled wildfires by conducting early-season dry burns. This improves the health of the land and avoids the release of emissions.

Qantas’s carbon-offsetting program is one of the largest of any airline and it’s growing. We’re now matching contributions each time you tick the box to fly carbon neutral. That’s on top of the 10 Qantas Points you earn for every dollar you spend offsetting your flight.

It’s all part of our goal to cap emissions at 2020 levels and hit net zero emissions by the year 2050. We announced this new target just before we kicked off our centenary celebrations, marking the start of our 100th year of operations. It’s a chance to celebrate the Qantas story with an eye on what’s ahead and there’ll be many exciting activities this year.

One of them arrives next month – five million of them, in fact. That’s how many Qantas Centenary $1 coins will enter circulation as official Australian tender. When they’re released, the flying kangaroo will have come full circle – our logo was inspired by the Australian one penny with a kangaroo at its centre.

So keep a look out for the Qantas Centenary $1 coin. If you choose to spend it on offsetting the carbon emissions on your next flight, remember that we’ll match it.

Wherever you’re flying today, thanks for choosing Qantas. We’re grateful for the support and loyalty that Australians have shown during our first century. As we prepare to enter our second, we’ll be working harder than ever to keep delivering for our customers and taking the spirit of Australia further.
