The much-loved I Still Call Australia Home advertising campaign gets a poignant reboot, featuring some famous stars and even more iconic landscapes.
“At the end of the day, this film is about a love for home, a love of place and a love of Australian people. Our land holds a special place for all of us… what’s so powerful about this commercial is it taps into that sentiment.” CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR KIKU OHE
The celebrities
This year, Kylie Minogue makes her Qantas ad debut, tinkering on a grand piano in London, while Troye Sivan sings in a Modernist home in the Hollywood Hills. The commercial also features Hugh Jackman (above) and sportspeople Ash Barty, Adam Goodes, Bronte Campbell and Ellie Cole.
The choir girl
Lily Taylor, a Melbourne schoolgirl in the Australian Girls Choir, sings the first line of the campaign while walking on Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsunday Islands. She is “proud to be a part of it”, she says. “It makes you realise how good Australia is.”
The history
The campaign debuted in 1987, with destinations such as Disneyland and Athens. It was refreshed in 1994 then again in 1997, starring Kate Ceberano, James Blundell and Yothu Yindi. It’s since been reinvented five times, the latest version taking the crew of 200 to 15 locations over 10 weeks of filming.
The locations
The ad’s highlights include the wild (Cape Raoul in Tasmania); the cosmopolitan (Melbourne, Victoria); and the pink (Hutt Lagoon in Western Australia).
The Qantas Choir
The Australian Girls Choir, National Boys Choir of Australia and the Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir are the biggest stars of the I Still Call Australia Home campaign, with thousands of members taking part since 1998. Collectively known as the Qantas Choir, the singers have been filmed at iconic spots around the world, such as the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal and the Brooklyn Bridge.
