When did humans become monogamous?
Historians and archaeologists assume that twosome relationships became common 5-10,000 years ago. At that time, humans went from being nomadic hunters and gatherers to becoming settled farmers, whose homes were the centres of their lives. Today, Christian communities are monogamous, whereas polygamy – marriage between more than two parties – is allowed in Muslim countries, where men can have several wives.
In the animal kingdom, monogamy is rare – only about 3 % of all animal species in the world live in steady relationships. Birds are an exception, as they include several monogamous species.
