What makes a magnet magnetic?

All atoms are surrounded by weak magnetic fields. In a magnet, they all point in the same direction, reinforcing each other, so the entire material becomes magnetic. If the order is disturbed – by heating or by the influence of an exterior magnetic field – the magnet loses its magnetic properties.
