Magnetic Field Created Close To The Surface

Jupiter’s magnetic field is one big mess, as it is created in violent turbulence near the surface.

Atotal mess with several small local fields. This is what Jupiter’s magnetic field looks like, according to Juno’s investigations. They also show that Jupiter’s magnetic field is twice as strong as anticipated, and 20,000 times stronger than Earth's.

So, the astronomers believe that Jupiter’s geodynamo is located close to the surface of the planet, where the minor local variations in the magnetic field are not blurred after a long journey from inside the giant. Previously, the astronomers believed that Jupiter’s magnetic field was created deep down in the gas giant, similar to that of Earth, which is created in the liquid iron core. The deep-lying dynamo gives Earth a orderly outer magnetic field.
