Despite frigid and hostile conditions, coastal Antarctica is full of animals. Here’s how they survive blistering winds and, of course, the ice.

The average coastal temperatur­e is -10 °C, but highly specialise­d animals defy the Antarctic cold. Some survive on a diet of seal faeces. Others have converted their teeth into a fine-meshed strainer.
