Even in the sum­mer, tem­per­a­tures do not rise above 10 de­grees, and the win­ters are long and cold. Around mid­sum­mer, it never gets dark, whereas at win­ter sol­stice, there is no light. Most po­lar re­gions are cov­ered in ice or snow through­out most of the year.
