Satellites to monitor all planes

In 70 % of the airspace, planes are now outside air traffic control radar screens. That will change with the Aireon system.

SATELLITES COVER EARTH

1 The Aireon system works by means of 66 satellites that cover all of the world, including oceans, deserts, and poles.

AIRCRAFT TRANSMIT DATA

2 All planes automatica­lly transmit informatio­n about position, speed, altitude, etc., which is received by the satellites.

CONTROL SERVICES MONITOR PLANES

3 Twice a second, the data is sent to earth stations, allowing planes to be observed in real time.
