Geologists search for gas on the ocean floor

-

The world’s consumption of natural gas has been rising steadily in recent years, and it is expected to out- compete coal as the world’s second largest energy source after oil in 2035. According to geologists, 60 % of the gas deposits are buried in fields beneath the ocean, and only five nations have access to 90+ % of the known deep sea reserves. The numbers will probably change in the future, as many ocean regions have not been explored yet. In 2018, Shell set out to extract gas in the ocean north-west of Australia, and the Eni energy company aims to drill off Mozambique from 2022.
