ANGEL OF THE DEEP
The bronze statue of “Madonna del Mare”, created by Marianne Hastianatte, was settled here in 1997 in memory of Zoagli’s seafaring captains, who explored the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. I visited her at night where she stands, 160 centimetres tall, under nine metres of water. I wanted to capture an image that could be read two possible ways: one, a beautiful aesthetic image of the figure in space, or alternatively as a sacral representation of paradise.
