PAPERHOUSE
Rose’s other fright-fable
Before Candyman, London-born Bernard Rose had raised critical eyebrows with Paperhouse (1988), widely regarded as one of the most interesting and esoteric British firghteners of its decade. Rose remains proud of his breakout shocker: “It was based on a great little book, which was written by Catherine Storr – and it has previously been done as a television serial. It’s nice to see people remember Paperhouse. I recall seeing Pan’s Labyrinth, actually, and I thought that was more or less a remake of it. Don’t you think?”
