The first time you meet your significant other’s parents is always awkward. But when Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) goes home with his girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) for a family get-together, he’s got good reason to worry. See, Chris is black, while Rose is from the kind of well-to-do white family that never even sees a nonwhite person who doesn’t work for them.

The racially-charged weirdness starts the moment the couple arrives: Rose’s dad (Bradley Whitford) falls over himself to express support for Obama and distant relatives coo at Chris’s biceps, while the hired help seem a little too happily subservient. Something is deeply wrong, beyond basic bigotry – without spoiling anything, let’s just say there’s a good reason we’re covering this film in SFX...

Writer/director Jordan Peele might be best known for his comedy work, but he clearly knows his way around genre storytelling. He’s got a great eye for unsettling imagery and an unerring knack for building tension through musical stings and ambiguous dialogue, without ever letting things descend into cliché.

Smart, funny, and scary in half a dozen unexpected ways, Get Out is a brilliantly crafted thriller that throws serious shade at every postmodern slasher that ever joked about the black dude dying first. Sarah Dobbs
