OUTLANDER: DESTINY DICE

-

With a major character who goes by the name Black Jack it’s borderline inexplicable that Outlander’s first tie-in game isn’t a reskinned pontoon. Instead, we have Destiny Dice, which distils the sweeping historical romance between WW2 nurse Claire Randall and 18th century Highlander Jamie Fraser into Yahtzee with pretty pictures.

Rather than numbers, however, each pleasingly chunky die features a combination of characters’ faces. The aim is to reunite Claire and Jamie and score the most points by rolling the most of each, or a combination of the two. Dice can be re-rolled up to three times, and there are cards that act as modifiers. But for the most part it all comes down to a lucky toss.

Clearly aimed at fans rather than boardgame obsessives, Outlander: Destiny Dice is suitably easy to get to grips with. But the game is also far too simple to offer the nuance necessary for long-term enjoyment. Despite the vast combination of possible rolls, nine out of ten rounds come down to who accrues the most Jamie faces, as not only is he the most common character, but too many other characters also contribute to your Jamie tally. Fun for a few hours, but unlike the show it won’t inspire a long-term relationship. Jordan Farley
