Gerry Conway also oversaw Harry Osborn assuming the mantle of the Green Goblin from his father. “Norman had obviously screwed up Harry’s life to a huge degree by being the Green Goblin, and Stan had previously done this storyline about his drug addiction,” says Conway. “It was never really clear what it was, but my take was that Harry had taken some unadulterated LSD and, as a result, had a propensity for bad flashbacks. I based that on my own experiences, as I had done LSD at a science fiction con with some very poor judgement in the early ’70s, and it totally freaked me out. Months afterwards, I was having these flashes of disassociation, so I thought, ‘I can use that to rationalise Harry’s transformation into Green Goblin.’”
