How would you describe the Colonel’s ethics?

Well, it’s kind of us or them. You could judge him to be a bit ruthless, but I think in his mind what he’s doing is much more noble. With considerable sacrifice, he’s trying to save humanity – that’d be the way he looks at it. The Colonel has some noble elements, and Caesar is starting to experience some of the dark side with everything that’s going on with him. So it’s not completely black and white.

How was working with the motion capture actors?

A little daunting at first, but then I got totally used to it. Terry Notary, who’s the movement coach, does an amazing job with these guys, so you really feel like you’re dealing with apes. eventually it doesn’t even feel like humans, the way they move – it’s really cool. And Andy Serkis has an ability with physical movement that is extraordinary. He’s definitely one of the most committed actors I’ve ever seen work.

Why should people go and see the film?

I think it’s really smart writing, and there’s a lot going on. There’s a kind of epic vista in this – it’s maybe even bigger in scope than the others. It has the war genre, the Western genre, and this mythic struggle. It’s very emotional, there’s a lot of humour, and it’s very intense. If they enjoyed the first two, this is gonna take them on a great journey as well.
