Lots more books to fill you in on, beginning with several continuing series. Our reviewer was unimpressed by Yoon Ha Lee’s military SF novel Ninefox Gambit… so naturally it was nominated for both Hugo and Arthur C Clarke awards. Whadda we know, eh? Should you wish to add your voice to the mob screaming, “Nothing, you idiots!” then pick up sequel RAVEN STRATAGEM (out now, Solaris). Fellow Clarke nominee The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet also has a follow-up: Becky Chambers’ standalone sequel A CLOSED AND COMMON ORBIT (out now, Hodder & Stoughton). We were lukewarm on the Firefly-esque first instalment, finding it a bit heavy on infodumps. Laura Lam’s near-future noir False Hearts was set in a future San Francisco of implantable surveillance chips and brain-hacking: “seductively terrifying”, we said. Set in the same world, SHATTERED MINDS (out now, Tor Books) centres on a serial killer who uses a dream drug so she’s only killing people in her imagination. Turning to non-fiction: there’s a revised reissue of INTO THE UNKNOWN (1 July, Headpress), the excellent 2006 biography of Quatermass creator Nigel Kneale. And fans of Italian horror director Lucio Fulci should check out the update of BEYOND TERROR (FAB Press), featuring 80,000 words of new prose. A special edition can be bought via their Indiegogo page at www.fabpress.com. It comes with extras including a bonus chapter and a DVD of Fulci trailers. The pre-order window slams shut on 28 June! A standard edition is due in the autumn if you can bear to wait.
