We were lukewarm on the Firefly-esque first instalment, finding it a bit heavy on infodumps. Laura Lam’s near-future noir False Hearts was set in a future San Francisco of implantable surveillance chips and brain-hacking: “seductively terrifying”, we said. Set in the same world, SHATTERED MINDS (out now, Tor Books) centres on a serial killer who uses a dream drug so she’s only killing people in her imagination. Turning to non-fiction: there’s a revised reissue of INTO THE UNKNOWN (1 July, Headpress), the excellent 2006 biography of Quatermass creator Nigel Kneale. And fans of Italian horror director Lucio Fulci should check out the update of BEYOND TERROR (FAB Press), featuring 80,000 words of new prose.
