It’s hard not to
be cynical about superhero deaths. In today’s over- saturated marketplace, one of the easiest ways to grab attention is to say, “Look which famous superhero we’re killing off this week!” Both Marvel and DC have overused this tactic to ridiculous levels over the last 20 years, but while the death of legendary X- Men member Wolverine may be a blatant sales tactic, at least Marvel have given him a relatively fitting send- off in this slick four- issue miniseries.
Death Of Wolverine follows up Paul Cornell’s recent run on the character; having lost his healing factor, Wolverine’s finally facing the end of his life. With news of his mortal status having gotten out, plenty of old enemies are looking for payback, and the story shifts from Canada to Madripoor and Japan as Logan tries to fend off his adversaries and prevent a potential revival of the Weapon X program that created him.
The prolific Charles Soule’s script pulls off the heady mix of grizzled attitude and grim, hard- edged action you’d expect from any Wolverine title, and is aided by muscular, energetic work from Steve McNiven and Jay Leisten on art duties. Admittedly, the story has all the depth of a computer game beat- emup and the issues are overpriced, but there’s a well- played sense of doom, and Logan’s final demise is touchingly played – if unlikely to remain permanent for long… Saxon Bullock One of Charles Soule’s current runs, sci- fi thriller Letter 44, is being worked up for Syfy by director Jonathan Mostow.
