Steven Ellis looks ahead to an Anderson academic event
Like your sci- fi events with a little bit of smarts? Then you’re in luck because Lincoln University is hosting a one- day symposium, Tele- fantasy And Society, on Wednesday 6 May. In the words of organiser Alex Lewczuk, senior lecturer in English and Journalism at the university, the event is designed to “provide an opportunity to network, reflect and celebrate the variety and quality of SF and tele- fantasy produced or related to the UK and US. This is the first tele- fantasy event we’ve staged, although in partnership with the Lincoln Inspired festival we have produced events relating to Doctor Who and the steampunk genre in previous years.”
One of the day’s main subjects will be the late Gerry Anderson and there’ll be a lecture by his son Jamie. Lewczuk said of Anderson: “He’s synonymous with Walt Disney and Jim Henson in terms of creative output, the 50th anniversary of the much- beloved original Thunderbirds series and new incarnation provided the perfect launch for the symposium.”
The event promises a packed schedule featuring panels by keynote speakers Professor Richard J Hand from the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries, who will present on US horror TV adaptations; followed by Dr Fiona Moore, from the University of South Wales, alongside Alan Stevens, who will give a lecture on their work with Blake’s 7, The
