BEYOND THE 23RD CENTURY

Spock wasn’t Leonard Nimoy’s only genre credit. Here are ten more…

-

FRINGE ( 2009– 12)

Nimoy’s swansong role would see him adored by a new generation of SF fans, playing tortured, reclusive genius Dr William Bell in JJ Abrams’ reality- spanning drama. THE SIMPSONS ( 1993– 97)

Skewering his public image, Nimoy beamed down to Springfield as an anecdote- mining celeb bore. Recent ep “The Princess Guide” was dedicated to his memory. TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE ( 1986)

In the unlikely company of Orson Welles and, um, Eric Idle, Nimoy lent his vocal cords to Galvatron in this animation. He also showed up in Michael Bay’s third Transformers. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS ( 1978)

A jittery remake brought pod- powered paranoia to ’ 70s San Francisco, casting Nimoy as a doomed psychiatrist.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ( 1969– 71) How do you follow Star

Trek? Get drafted into the IMF team as suave illusionist The Great Paris, that’s how. Nimoy radiated ’ 60s spy- fi cool.

THE OUTER LIMITS ( 1964)

Nimoy appeared in the original adaptation of Earl and Otto Binder’s “I, Robot” ( unrelated to Isaac Asimov’s book of the same name) – and also the 1995 remake.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE ( 1961)

Rod Serling’s fabled anthology show cast Nimoy as a WW2 grunt in time- twisting tale “A Quality Of Mercy”, alongside Quantum Leap’s Dean Stockwell.

THE BRAIN EATERS ( 1958)

“Crawling, slimy things terror- bent on destroying the world!” An early turn as a boffin in this B- movie schlockfest, he was mis- credited as Leonard Nemoy.

THEM! ( 1954)

“A horror- horde of crawl and crush giants clawing out of the earth from mile- deep catacombs!” Blink and you’ll miss Nimoy’s uncredited turn as an army sergeant facing the menace of mutant ants.

ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE ( 1952)

Nimoy’s first dabble with alien DNA was as a ruthless Martian invader in this gloriously named Saturday matinee serial from the ’ 50s.
