A UK Blu- ray debut for John Carpenter’s pointless remake of the eerie 1960 classic based on John Wyndham novel The Midwich Cuckoos, in which, after a whole village mysteriously blacks out, women give birth to emotionless, other- worldly children with terrifying mental powers. Christopher Reeve stars, in his last role before he was paralysed. Transplanting events from Britain to California, it’s a lethargic affair which adds nothing of any real value: one of the creepy kids is now more humanised, plus there’s a goes- nowhere government conspiracy subplot, and lashings of macabre violence ( for example, during the blackout, someone falls asleep on a barbecue…).
