20 best tv shows of the last 20 years
Will you agree with our list of the best sci- fi telly since SFX’s inception in our second 20/ 20 feature?
SFX has been on hand to chart
the rise and fall of many fantastic ( and, let’s face it,
not- so- fantastic – hello Crime Traveller, Demons and Krod Mandoon And The Flaming Sword Of
Fire) television shows over the past two decades. We’ve seen science fiction shows go from being a niche part of TV programming ( Farscape, Babylon 5, Firefly) to hitting the mainstream so hard we’re still feeling the repercussions ( The X- Files, Lost, Doctor Who). We’re sure you have your favourites – although not all of them might be present in this list – but here ( in no particular order) are the 20 shows we believe have delivered the absolute best in small- screen fantasy from 1995 until today. Doctor Who
Our favourite Time Lord’s return to Saturday night prime- time has been a joy, from Christopher Eccleston telling everygirl Rose Tyler to “Run!” through to Peter Capaldi’s Christmas Day attack- eyebrows. It’s a delight to live in a world in which David Tennant cried “Allons- y!”, Matt Smith waxed lyrical about bow ties and John motherf ** king Hurt was the bloody Doctor. And on top of all this goodness, thanks to Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat’s life- long love of the show, 21st century Doctor Who feels utterly,
unmistakably right.
