Brian Aldiss dubbed space opera “widescreen baroque”. Heavily influenced by the new weird and cyberpunk, Alastair Reynolds reengineered it as a kind of widescreen gonzo grand guignol where grotesque things happen to morally ambiguous people. Science fiction really hasn’t been the same since. Revelation Space was so dazzling it helped to persuade M John Harrison to return to space opera.
