For too many years, the futures conjured up by SF writers, at least those that have got attention in the US and Europe, have described western futures. For all it was written by a pale- skinned chap in Belfast, River Of Gods – set in the balkanised India of 2047 – was key in opening up a space for Asian and African writers to tell audiences about their worlds.
