The Road Cormac McCarthy, 2006
Apocolit now… Whether thanks to zombie plagues, climate change or nuclear fallout, we’ve lately been assailed by novels about the end of the world. The Road stands far above most of these books for one primary reason: McCarthy isn’t much interested in what might have brought about the end of civilisation, but instead unflinchingly shows us the human cost as a father struggles to protect his son. As readers, we guess from the off it’s a hopeless task, which only heightens the horror.
