NB: some guides consider these 24 episodes to comprise both seasons five and six. The stories themselves increasingly step further into the fantastic and tales like “Epic” and “The Winged Avenger” are delightfully absurd. We said: “Perhaps too many episodes follow a too- similar formula, and some of the scripts don’t quite have the pace and invention of the best of season four. But this is television that doesn’t come along very often: bold, original and visionary. It could only have been made in Britain and it could only have been made in the ’ 60s.”
