1 Barry says that the sci- fi series is getting a proper send- off but there were lots of plots and subplots left on the writing room floor when it was announced that season four would be the last. “The best analogy would be that we had a long road trip planned with lots of side trips to small towns and towards the end of the trip, we got on the freeway to finish the trip. If we had more time and more seasons, we would have been able to find those side stories and other adventures that were connected to the larger mythology.”
Police Academy
2 Fan favourite detective Carlos has been played expertly by Victor Webster. This comes as less of a surprise with knowledge that the actor’s father is a police officer. Barry tells Red Alert that Kiera’s partner might actually enjoy some success in the final season. “Carlos, and Victor in particular, has a big heart and his physicality belies a very sensitive person so we felt that the reward for Carlos would have to be something bigger for him. It had to be a victory in a larger sense so we tried to make sure that was part of his story. I think we succeeded.”
Kiera evolved
3 Rachel Nichols transformed time- travelling cop Kiera Cameron from action hero to dramatic lead. “From the point of writing, I know that myself and the other writers started to anchor the storytelling in a way so that we could drive the other elements of the story around what we knew Rachel [ Nichols] was going to deliver in terms of the emotional stakes,” explains Barry. “That really helps you as a writer because that means you’re not just telling one story. You’re immediately layering everything that you are doing with an added level of emotion.”
Politically Charged
4 “We never wanted politics to interfere with our storytelling but having said that we know that the future and notions of the future are loaded with political ramifications because the decisions we make in the present have a ripple effect into the future,” explains Barry. “A lot of the decisions we make are linked to politics, business and social change so we felt that it was important to the show in terms of which future we get and which future we want to preserve.”
