Bowie’s first hit, 1969’ s “Space Oddity”, follows the journey of Major Tom – an astronaut who trips way out into the cosmos – and Bowie would return to the character periodically ( culminating in last year’s “Blackstar” video). The Diamond Dogs album was borne out of an attempt to create a musical of Orwell’s 1984; and his Outside album was a dystopian cyberpunk mystery. But Ziggy Stardust was undoubtedly Bowie’ biggest creation. This pansexual alien superman arrived like a lightning bolt and picked on you to hear his glam rock message.
