Superman: The Movie

-

Superman takes Lois Lane flying. Then he lands her on her balcony and flies off. She makes her way to the interior of her apartment, opens the door, and there’s Clark Kent… It took us a month to figure out how to do it. After they separate, we hold on Lois for a minute, she starts to walk, but she kind of stops. There’s a slight blur. That was a separate piece of film, over her shoulder, of him flying away and her starting to walk. Instead of a background, we had a projection screen and a front projector. We projected on that screen Superman flying away. We dollied our camera and followed Lois inside, where Christopher Reeve was waiting, in a totally different outfit — because it was a month later. It’s easy to draw it up, but it was a fucking feat. We had a great director of photography, Geoffrey Unsworth… I miss all that stuff. I miss the challenge of making movies.
