The actor/ director on becoming Batman...

-

He’s Batman, donchaknow?

Wayne’s new manner

“Zack [ Snyder, director] wanted to explore that the Bruce Wayne side of Batman was also a mask. The ‘ playboy philanthropist’ was a character used to throw people off the scent of his secret identity, but also a way to fill this void inside him. He does have these bimbo girls over and doesn’t shy away from that which I thought was interesting and darker.”

Opposing wo rld views

“[ Batman and Superman] become enemies at the end of Man Of Steel when that building comes down; they just don’t know it. Superman is very suspicious and sees Batman as a vigilante. Bruce Wayne is going out as Batman and getting more and more violent. Clark Kent is becoming upset by this and wants to write a story about it for the Daily Planet.”

Open to instruction

“I come to work and say, ‘ Where do you want me?’ I’m very mindful of not saying, ‘ Why don’t we do this?’ because it’s not my movie.”

Creating credible adversaries

“The problem with Superman is you have to trick it out and skew it, otherwise he’s too strong. Villains have to be from outer space like Darkseid. We had to find ways to balance it out but Zack and Chris [ Terrio, screenwriter] did it in an artful way so it wasn’t silly or convenient.”

Justice League goals

“There’s this and a Wonder Woman movie before Justice League. I’ve been lucky to be privy to the inside scoop of the plans and it’s really exciting. I am usually pretty cynical but I’ve been jazzed by what I’ve seen.”

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is in cinemas now.
