Sci-fi stars and fantasy fans unite at MCM London Comic-Con...
Celebrating its 15th year this May, MCM London Comic Con returns to the city’s Victoria Dock for a weekend packed with sci-fi and fantasy superstars, exhibits, cosplay enthusiasts and a vast array of stalls to keep your shelves stocked with the very best genre goodies (and your bank balances weeping).
“May’s event looks like it’s going to be our biggest yet,” says MCM Central CEO Bryan Cooney. “Since ‘London Expo’ first opened its doors at the then-new ExCeL centre back in 2002, we’ve seen geek culture move into the mainstream, with genre movies ruling the big screen, series such as Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead taking over TV, and the games industry turning into an unstoppable juggernaut.”
Last year, more than 130,000 people attended the event, making it the UK’s biggest celebration of modern pop culture. And this year should be no different, with an A-list guest list to look forward to. Attendees confirmed so far (with more to come) include Star Trek legend Nichelle Nichols alongside Flash Gordon’s Sam J Jones, Firefly’s Summer Glau and Adventure Time voice actor Hynden Walch (aka Princess Bubblegum).
When you’re not hanging out with celebs, the Comic Village is the perfect place to hunt for old gems and fresh talent. There’s also a Cosplay Masquerade both days, with attendees welcome to dress up and strut their stuff – or you can just sit back and admire the costumes from a comfy seat. Plus swing by the Steampunk Emporium to find out more about the most fashionable of sci-fi attire. And, naturally, there’s the 2017 MCM London Comic Con Mega Party to get ready for, as well.
“During that time, our London show has transformed from a collectors’ and autograph event into a huge US-style comic con,” says Cooney. “Watching MCM London Comic Con grow from humble beginnings to become the largest event of its type in Europe has been very special for us.”
