Expect a right Royals rumble as the Inhumans return
After the previous destruction of their traditional home attilan, the inhumans are now leaving the earth behind. written by al ewing and drawn by Jonboy meyers, Royals sees the marvel universe’s most aloof superhumans heading out into space after the devastating events of Inhumans Vs X-Men.
“New directions are the order of the day, as IvX has done a lovely job of shaking things up,” says ewing, who is sending the inhumans on a mission to discover a long-hidden truth about their alien heritage. “expect the usual big cosmic revelations, but with a lot more emotional drama! i was looking over the character arcs for all the cast, and was surprised by how many involved love stories, so maybe this could be the stealth relaunch of romance comics?”
headed up by the currently estranged black bolt and medusa, ewing was keen to feature a combination of old and new inhumans. “the book is called Royals, so it was obviously going to be mostly about the royals,” he says. “but at the same time, people like karnak seemed more interesting on earth right now, lockjaw would have made a long and difficult journey too easy and triton just didn’t grab me as much as Flint or swain. and i had an idea that having a non-inhuman on the team might be interesting, so we went for marvel boy, who i’d had some vague thoughts about, but fitted into this book in an entirely different way.”
having once ruled the kree empire before “abandoning it for reasons that black bolt didn’t really make clear”, the inhumans will have to deal with the consequences of their actions during their last interstellar stint. “the kree haven’t forgotten that, especially ronan the accuser, who’s been in an extended period of mourning ever since hala was destroyed,” teases ewing. “crystal was also married to ronan but she then broke it off. ronan now has cosmic powers after the black Vortex event, and auspiciously the royals’ first stop on their space quest is the ruins of hala.”
