Going Solo
With shooting underway, we dissect the first picture from the han solo movie
GARRIS SHRIKE
1 Woody Harrelson In what looks like another mentor role for Woody Harrelson after The Hunger Games, Garris Shrike was the man who raised Han in the old expanded universe, a former bounty hunter who’ll presumably play a key role in shaping his protege’s flexible moral code.
NEW DROID
2 Phoebe Waller-Bridge We’ve seen female droids in Star Wars before – EV-9D9 assigns R2-D2 and C-3PO their jobs in Jabba’s Palace – but never in a leading role. Smart money, however, says that Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge is going down the same performancecapture route as Alan Tudyk did for K-2SO in Rogue One. And that one didn’t turn out too badly.
HAN SOLO
3 Alden Ehrenreich The jacket may be more Indiana Jones, but the hair definitely has the style of a young Harrison Ford – give him the waistcoat and we reckon Alden Ehrenreich will really look the part. The question is, at what point in Han’s journey to scoundreldom will we meet him? Fresh out of the Imperial Academy? Or with a few years of smuggling under his belt?
UNKNOWN
4 Emilia Clarke Continuing the Disney-era Star Wars tradition of casting a Brit actress in a leading part, Game Of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke crosses over into the Star Wars universe. We have no idea who she’s playing – but we think it’s safe to assume Han Solo’s had a few interesting encounters with women…
CHEWBACCA
5 Joonas Suotamo Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo has apparently inherited the walking carpet costume from Peter Mayhew full-time for this outing. We’d love to see the moment where Han saves the Wookiee, and starts the “life-debt” that led to them becoming BFFs. “I was on a bad path, and Chewie, he put me straight,” Han says in Aftermath: Life Debt.
LANDO CALRISSIAN
6 Donald Glover Community’s Donald Glover gets to try on the coolest name in the galaxy for size. Unfortunately for him, we suspect we’re also going to see him lose the Millennium Falcon – “fair and square” – in a game of Sabacc. Perhaps it wasn’t a difficult decision to betray Han on Cloud City, after all.
THE DIRECTORS
7 Christopher Miller (L) and Phil Lord (R) The so-hot-right-now duo behind The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs are handed the controls of the Millennium Falcon. The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan scripts with his son Jon.
THE REAL STAR
8 The Millennium Falcon The Corellian freighter will still be the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, whoever’s in command…
