“THE DYNAMIC IS WORKING REALLY WELL…”
MIKE COLTER AND FINN JONES ARE LUKE CAGE AND DANNY RAND
Given the comic book history between Luke and Danny, does it feel like a natural pairing?
FINN The dynamic between the characters is working really well. Before we started this, because there was such hype around our characters coming together for the first time, there was a worry that it might be too oversensationalised or too overwritten or too overanticipated. But the way that it’s written and the way that we’re getting on and working together, it feels really natural.
MIKe They’re trying to organically allow our characters to get to know each other, without just going, “Hey, I like you, you like me, let’s hang out!” What’s it like working with Sigourney Weaver? FINN Sigourney’s amazing. She’s very talented, very generous and kind. Genuine. Just has an excellent energy about her. A team player through and through. It’s been great sharing scenes with her. She just elevates it to a level which is superior.
MIKe There are times when I want her to be a diva, so we can go home early, but she never is. She’s with us at four or five in the morning. FINN If anyone’s a diva it’s Mike. MIKe I know, I know. Luke Cahge comes out. FINN We’ve actually got a drag act. Luke Cahge and Glitter Fist. It’s going to be a spin-off series we’re doing. MIKe We’ll find some channel that’ll take it. Could the Avengers meet the Defenders? FINN We’re part of the same universe. If there ever was a mash-up between the Avengers and the Defenders, I think it’d be really nice to see the Avengers come to the Netflix world. It’d be way more interesting to see those characters fleshed out the same way as our characters are, rather than just see our characters do some big fucking fight scene! There’s nothing cool about that. MIKe I’d have to catch a ride on one of the planes because I don’t fly… FINN Really get into the psyche of Iron Man or Captain America, really spend some time developing the internal notions of those characters. MIKe It would be easier to have them come into our world because it would probably be more believable. There’s not some huge universal thing going on, some intergalactic thing invading the planet or something like that. Stark’s up in the tower… FINN Bring him down to reality… MIKe Bring him down to us a little bit. We could use their help, you know? FINN Rough ’em up. MIKe Put on street clothes. FINN Get ’em to Harlem. How good would that be, seeing Tony Stark in Harlem? That’s fucking brilliant! Although it would be cool to see Luke Cage in a different universe, fighting off some dark overlord. That’d be cool. Luke Cage and Iron Fist in space!

who’s already given so much of her life and her career to genre storytelling. She’s iconic and she’s powerful and smart.”
At just eight episodes, The Defenders promises to deliver a leaner, tighter narrative than the standard 13-episode run of a Marvel Netflix show. “Part of it was a scheduling thing, so we could free up krysten so she could go shoot Jessica Jones season two, so we could free up Mike to shoot Luke season two. Those fanbases are dying for those individual series again. The other thing is we wanted to keep this team-up organic. These characters are all so independent that I’m not sure they’re going
