PATTON OSWALT

THE US COMEDIAN AND AGENTS OF SHIELD STAR REVEALS HIS GENRE FAVES

-

First SF/Fantasy Film

the one that really blew me away and pulled me into that world was the original King Kong. even by today’s standards, there’s something very dreamlike and weird about the world in that movie, the very stark black and white. the other one that stayed with me was the animated Yellow Submarine in terms of, “Oh, you can just do anything you think of”. It has a weird logic to it, and it’s just really beautiful. When John Lennon is singing “All you Need Is Love” and feeding the glove by making words fall out of the sky? that was kind of amazing for a little kid to see.

Favourite SF/Fantasy Comic

Right now, the one that really blows me away is Brian K Vaughan’s Saga that Image Comics is putting out. Imagine a very wise and witty, very sexually aware Star Wars. If Richard Linklater made a Star Wars movie, it may look like this. there’s just genius worldbuilding, too. He’s just really thought out this world. It’s amazing.

SF/Fantasy Guilty Pleasure

For me it’s stuff like The Fifth Element, which is such fucking horseshit, but so goddamn entertaining. there’s something so goddamn nutty and fun about that movie that it charms the shit out of me. If it’s on tV late at night, I’m like, “Fuck it, I’ll sit and watch this. I’m in!” Same with The Last Starfighter, and I know that’s really cheesy too but it’s so good. I don’t know why, there’s just something that fucking works. The Rocketeer, too. I mean, that’s a good movie, but there’s just a certain attitude about it that makes me really happy.

Patton Oswalt’s Annihilation comes to Netflix on 17 October.
