Writer Gail simone Artists david Baldeón, Jesus aburtov Veteran comics writer Gail Simone has proved time and again that she’s great at writing kick-ass female protagonists, so it’s no surprise that Marvel has hired her to give luck-enhanced mercenary Domino her first ongoing comic. Riding on the coat-tails of the character’s live-action appearance in Deadpool 2, this new series is already shaping up to be a ton of fast-paced, action-packed fun.

The longtime member of X-Force’s abilities can be just as much of a curse as a blessing, and Domino kicks off with them starting to malfunction, thanks to a vengeful female villain named Topaz. On top of surviving her increasingly unreliable powers, Domino also has to work out which of her current friends may be betraying her…

Simone shows that she’s expert at this kind of full-tilt mix of violence and melodrama, and she balances the action set-pieces with satisfying humour and effective glimpses into the darker pieces of Domino’s persona. Each issue is packed with incident, and the rollicking pace is enhanced by energetic art from David Baldeón that perfectly rides the line between Domino looking characterful and sexy.

This superhero action-fest isn’t a comic that’s setting out to change the world, but it’s certainly off to a lively and attention-grabbing start.
