It’s a familiar notion. Nuclear war has ravaged the planet. Cities have become concrete landscapes drenched in neon (and a fair amount of rain). Blade Runner bundles up the anxieties of the ’80s to create a world that’s overpopulated, oppressively dark and unforgivingly violent. the corporate greed and rapid consumerism of the era was dialled up to 11 in the film’s portrayal of a multicultural los angeles filled with industrial wastelands, fire and machinery, and the anxieties of a decade preoccupied with technological progress and nuclear power are writ large in neon on the side of skyscrapers. Perhaps we should give replicants a shot at running the earth. maybe they’d do a better job.

Bring an umbrella, a trench coat and a moody disposition and you might just land yourself a job.
